Archetypal principles, as Tarnas points out, are both multivalent and multidimensional , which means they manifest in a wide variety of ways while remaining consistent with their core meanings, and they take different forms of expression across all dimensions of reality. I should explain also that while astrology is incompatible with the basic tenets of mechanistic science and the materialistic conception of the nature of reality that have prevailed throughout the modern era, it is far more congruent with many of the new paradigm perspectives that have recently emerged in physics, biology, psychology, and elsewhere.
The ideas of holism, interconnectedness, interdependence, organicism, self-organization, and non-local causality that have emerged from relativity theory and quantum theory in physics or from the systems approach in biology have presented us with a view of reality sharply divergent from that based on classical physics and the still-dominant Cartesian-Newtonian mechanistic paradigm.
As I have attempted to show in The Archetypal Cosmos , these new models, together with the insights of the psychology of the unconscious, provide an increasingly coherent and supportive theoretical context within which we can better comprehend the likely basis of astrological correspondences. It is in this context that I offer the following reflections on the possible archetypal and evolutionary meaning of the discovery of Eris.

The term planet has significantly different meanings in astronomy and astrology. In astrology, the meaning reflects the Greek origins of the term. Though a distinction is often made between planets and luminaries, the astrological tradition has generally retained the original more encompassing meaning, referring to the Sun and Moon as planets.
About the author
In astronomy, the term planet is defined more narrowly based on the specific physical attributes and orbital characteristics of planetary bodies, and must now be distinguished from new classes or subclasses of planetary objects called dwarf planets and plutoids. Consequently, the terms planets and dwarf planets were henceforth used to refer to two different classes of objects. On June 11, , a further announcement was made by the IAU regarding the definition of a new sub-class of objects to be known as plutoids:.
The fifth dwarf planet is Ceres, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Because it is not a trans-Neptunian object, Ceres is not classified as a plutoid. However, a number of other recently discovered planet-like bodies are considered to be strong candidates for the plutoid classification, including Quaoar and Sedna. The discovery was confirmed in January , and was.

The discovery in of Erisa dwarf planet beyond Plutowas therefore an event of great significance for astrology as well as astronomy. In this unique book, Keiron Le Grice considers the astrological significance of Eris. A particular form of The Hand shown at right has been proposed for use as the astronomical and astrological symbol for the dwarf planet Eris.
The Hand is one of several symbols sometimes used to designate the conclusion of a mathematical proof by contradiction. In this setting, it is usually drawn horizontally, with little or no adornment, as , , or some minor variant thereof. While less compact than some of the alternatives such as the blitz or crosshatch , The Hand has the advantage of being visually suggestive of the core concept of this method of reasoning: The conflicting conclusions are represented by the two arrows, and in order to avoid an impasse, one set of assumptions must give way.
